One size, never fits two minds

SP&C specialises  in tailoring an approach to meet your unique needs - offering evidence-based therapy and treatment options - whether you prefer face-to-face sessions or online support.

SP&C Approach

The SP&C approach to therapy is progressive, flexible, and always current.  A range of modalities may be drawn on to suit your individual needs, blending humanistic and psychodynamic perspectives with methods like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, trauma-informed care, and Emotionally Focused Therapy among others. This diverse toolkit helps tailor an approach to best support your individual needs.

Therapeutic services address a broad spectrum of human experiences  including anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationships, stress management, career direction, and navigating significant life changes as well as integrating therapeutic insights into daily life. Therapy also serves as a valuable tool for exploring barriers that may be getting in the way of unmet potential while also helping us to better understand ourselves and those we are in relationship with.

Fundamental to effective therapy is finding someone you really ‘click’ with – someone you can chat openly with and who gets where you’re coming from

FAQs

  • People come to therapy for a whole range of reasons.  Some come for support with a specific challenge they’re facing, while others view therapy as a way to nurture their mental well-being, much like having a personal trainer for the mind. Whether you’re dealing with a tough issue or just looking to enhance your overall mental health, therapy can be a valuable and essential investment in your well-being.

  • Feeling apprehensive or even a bit awkward in the beginning is entirely normal and understandable - we aren’t big fans of the unknown! That first session definitely calls on a little bravery.

SP&C is dedicated to creating a warm and inviting space where you can truly feel at ease - taking time to ensure you’re comfortable -  working together at a pace that is your own.

  • Everyone’s needs in therapy are unique, so what works best can vary. For some, a series of weekly sessions may be ideal, while others might find that a longer-term approach with more time between sessions is a better fit. SP&C will work with you to find the rhythm that best supports your goals.

Most clients find that attending weekly or fortnightly sessions works well, and many transition to monthly sessions as they progress. SP&C sees therapy as a long-term journey of growth, commitment and investiment in yourself. As you gain confidence and new skills, you might choose to schedule occasional check-ins to stay on track.

To help you make the most of your therapy, SP&C suggest booking 4 to 8 sessions ahead of time. Penciling in your spot early is a smart move, as availability can fill up quickly especially if you prefer a certain day or time.

  • It's a plan made by your GP which briefly outlines treatments or services that can help you in achieving your mental health goals.

And no, a MHCP is not essential - it just helps cover some of the cost of seeing a psychologist through Medicare, making it more affordable - which can be really helpful.

If getting a MHCP in place sounds like something you'd like to do - check-in with your GP, who will chat with you about your mental health and discuss your needs. If they think you could benefit from accessing support, they'll work with you to create a plan. After attending six sessions you’ll need to review the plan with your GP so they can check how you're going and if further sessions might be helpful. Up to 10 subsidised sessions may be accessed each calendar year.

  • Depending on your cover, you might be able to claim some of the cost of your therapy sessions.  It's worth checking with your health insurer to see what you're eligible for and how to claim it.

Just a heads-up though - if you claim through your private health cover, you can't also claim the same session through Medicare. It's one or the other, depending on your coverage and what suits you best.
